Top court defers hearing on state plea in Sharif case

Islamabad: The Supreme Court yesterday deferred the hearing of a government appeal against a high court decision barring former prime minister Nawaz Sharif from running in a parliamentary by-election.
Last week a three-judge bench of the top court stayed the by-election in the Lahore constituency of the National Assembly, from where Sharif has filed his nomination, until a decision on the government petition. The government's appeal against the decision of the Lahore High Court (LHC) would be heard again in two weeks time, the bench said yesterday.
Sharif, the chief of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), a major partner in the ruling coalition led by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), did not appear before the bench.
The PPP-led government challenged the LHC judgement after Sharif announced he would not appeal before judges he says President Pervez Musharraf installed unlawfully when he imposed emergency in November last year and sacked dozens of independent judges.
