Karachi:Thousands of people on Saturday attended the funeral of 14 people killed in Friday's double suicide bomb attack on Shiites in Karachi.

The death toll from the assault rose overnight to 31.

"Six more people died overnight, raising the death toll to 31," said provincial government spokesman Jameel Soomro.

He said at least 170 wounded people were being treated at various hospitals around Karachi.

Pakistani TV channels broadcast live footage from the venue, showing men and women clad in black and carrying black flags, beating their chests and chanting religious slogans.

Hundreds of minority Shiite Muslims have gathered in Pakistan's largest city amid tight security for a mass funeral for those killed in a pair of bombings.

At least 25 people died in Karachi on Friday when suspected Sunni militants targeted a bus carrying Shiite worshippers and then attacked a hospital treating victims of the first bomb.

Paramilitary spokesman Major Aurang Zeb said on Saturday that security forces were on maximum alert in the Malir area of the southern port city.

Many businesses were observing a strike over the attacks.
