KARACHI: The speaker of provincial Sindh assembly on Tuesday offered his mediatory role to help end differences between Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, after the latter decided to part ways with the government.

Talking to media before the provincial assembly session began, Agha Siraj Durrani, the speaker of Sindh assembly, said that there should be greater unity between the government and its allies for the betterment and development of the province.

He said that wherever there was any misunderstanding among the allies, there should be a way out through negotiations.

The MQM had declared its separation from the ruling alliance with the PPP government in Sindh province after the speech of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the PPP chairman on the last weekend in which he told his supporters that he would grab the MQM mandate in the next elections.

On Monday, the MQM ministers and advisors resigned from their offices and the party told the assembly officials to allot them the opposition benches as they did not want to carry on with the PPP any more.

The MQM also vowed to pursue with its demand of creating new provinces by dividing Sindh that irked PPP and other parties.

Durrani said that he was making efforts to not let MQM sit on the opposition benches and the alliance might continue. He said that the Local Government Act was amended and further amendments could be expected in the Act if needed.

Khawja Izhsarul Haq, the MQM legislator in the Sindh assembly in his media talk said that the political tension could be defused if the PPP augments the role of people like Durrani. He said that the MQM had played the role of opposition earlier and could assume the role again.
