Dubai: Exiled former prime minister Nawaz Sharif will return to Pakistan in November, according to Professor Ahsan Iqbal, Information Secretary of the Pakistan Muslim League-N.

"Sharif will go back in November but the date of his return will be announced after the Supreme Court's verdict on his deportation," Iqbal told Gulf News.

The court decision is expected on October 30.

Iqbal dispelled reports Sharif would not be allowed to return before general elections expected in January next year.

"We are sure he will go back and take part in the general elections," he said, adding Sharif will travel to London from Saudi Arabia before going to Pakistan.

He said Sharif was deported upon landing in Islamabad in October because President Pervez Musharraf and his ally, the ruling party, are afraid of him.

Iqbal welcomed Pakistan Peoples Party Chairperson Benazir Bhutto's return but criticised the government for adopting double standards.

"I would call it discrimination as the government provided full support to Bhutto on her arrival but did not allow Sharif to go back to his people and country," he said.
