Islamabad: Pakistan Muslim League-N (PMLN) chief Nawaz Sharif named a four-member committee yesterday for liaison with the government over implementation of a 10-point reform agenda accepted by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
Senator Ishaq Dar, a former finance minister, will head the panel which includes Sardar Mehtab Abbasi, Senator Pervaiz Rasheed and retired Lt General Abdul Qadir Baloch. Sharif told the media in Lahore he had given the agenda in national interest as the country was in dire straits.
The prime minister called the chief of the main opposition party on Sunday, a day before the expiry of a six-day deadline set by the PML-N to accept its demand or face expulsion of PPP ministers from the Punjab province cabinet.
Relative calm has descended on the political scene after Gilani successfully wooed Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) back into the coalition and then took a bold step to appease the PML-N.
The PML-N chief said his party's coalition with Pakistan People's Party in Punjab would remain intact.
"We hope the government will show seriousness in implementing the national agenda which will ensure economic and political stability," PML-N chief spokesman Ahsan Iqbal said in an interview published yesterday.
He said the government would have to move swiftly. "Otherwise the situation could become too complicated for the PPP to handle," Iqbal added.
The spokesman said the party would monitor progress on the implementation of the agenda by the government over the next 45 days and announce its strategy after that.
He said the four-member PML-N committee would play an advisory role and it would be available to help the government, if they faced any problem in implementing the agenda or needed any guidance or advice.
