Karachi: Gunmen on Friday killed another lawyer even while the fraternity mourned the recent killing of a colleague.

Advocate Gulam Raza Haider was on his way home from the court when four assailants on two motorcycles targeted his car and shot him dead near the Karachi Metropolitan Office (KMC), police said.

The killing was the second in two days after unknown killers gunned down advocate Waqalrul Hassan in Gulshane Iqbal on Wednesday.

Hassan was Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s lawyer in 1999, when Sharif’s government was toppled in a bloodless coup and he was implicated in a plane hijacking case.

The lawyers staged a sit in on Friday and boycotted court proceedings over Hassan’s murder.

The city has been experiencing a new wave of sectarian and other killings.

In the past 24 hours, at least nine people, including two women, were killed in different parts of the city.

In September last year, law enforcement agencies launched an operation against criminals in the city.

The police claimed that since the operation was launched, the number of murders reduced by 30 per cent and target killings was down by 56 per cent.

On average, 250 people were being killed in the city on a monthly basis.

Meanwhile, paramilitary rangers killed a kidnapping suspect and recovered three abducted men in an encounter.

The abductors kidnapped three people and stole their truck from Sarjani town on Friday morning. The abductors were trying to take the captives to the jungle but the rangers intercepted them.

In the shoot-out, one of the accused was killed while the rest fled.
