Islamabad: Chaudhry Amir Hussain, the Speaker of the National Assembly, believes the resignations of legislators from the opposition All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) will not affect the presidential election tomorrow.

"I will forward the resignations to the Election Commission of Pakistan, once I find all of them in order," Hussain told Gulf News.

"I have to examine every resignation personally as some have been tendered individually and some [have been] submitted collectively through the head of the concerned party or alliance," he said.

Hussain said he does not see how the resignations could possibly affect the proceedings of the presidential election until the assembly is intact.

He added: "The issue of resignations is very delicate so I will look into all cases very carefully."

He added it was difficult to determine the exact date when notifications would be issued for acceptance of the resignations.

"It will be premature to give any date for notification as the matter is still under scrutiny," Hussain said.

The Speaker said tomorrow would not be a regular session of the National Assembly, but a meeting to elect the president.

"The Election Commission of Pakistan will conduct the proceedings of that day as the assembly will be a polling station," he said.
