Islamabad: Asif Ali Zardari has won Pakistan's presidential election, according to officials and a partial tally of votes on Saturday.
"Asif Ali Zardari secured 281 votes out of the 426 valid votes polled in the parliament," said chief election commissioner Qazi Mohammad Farooq said.
An official announcement has yet to given.
Large numbers of security forces guarded the Parliament building in Islamabad as voting was held in Pakistan's two chambers of parliament and four provincial assemblies.
Zardari faced off against Mushahid Hussain, a senator from the pro-Musharraf party, and Saeeduzzaman Siddiqui, a former judge.
Zardari secured a majority in three of the four provincial assemblies forming the presidential electoral college, officials said.
In Sindh, Zardari secured 62 of the 65 electoral votes. He also emerged a clear winner in the North West Frontier Province with 56 votes against five for Siddiqui and one for Hussain.
In Baluchistan, Zardari bagged 59 votes while Siddiqui and Hussain got two each. Results from Punjab province were still awaited.
