Pakistan's foreign minister to resume dialogue with India
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Qureshi said on Saturday that the stalled comprehensive dialogue between Pakistan and India would be resumed at the earliest.
Islamabad: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Qureshi said on Saturday that the stalled comprehensive dialogue between Pakistan and India would be resumed at the earliest.
Talking to reporters in Karachi, he said Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee expressed the desire for resumption of the dialogue when he talked to him by telephone soon after the new Pakistan Cabinet was sworn in.
Invitation
Qureshi, who belongs to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), said the Indian foreign minister was invited to visit Islamabad and dates would be finalised soon.
Ahead of Mukherjee's trip, the Indian foreign secretary would visit Islamabad to restart the dialogue process.
Pakistan and India had launched the so-called composite dialogue in January 2004 aimed at resolving all outstanding issues between the two countries.
The process was interrupted due to political crisis in Pakistan, where parliamentary elections held in February this year brought about a PPP-led coalition government.
Settlement
Qureshi said the new government in Pakistan would seek a just settlement of the lingering Kashmir dispute between Pakistan and India.
"It is in the interest of both the countries to resolve our problems through negotiations," the foreign minister said.
He said Pakistan wanted peace and stability in the region and it would honour its international obligations and commitments.
