Islamabad: The main opposition Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) on Friday advised the government against taking hefty foreign loans to handle the massive task of rehabilitation of the flood-stricken people in the country.

Such a course would push the country deeper into the debt trap, PML-N chief spokesman Ahsan Iqbal told reporters.

The Asian Development Bank and the World Bank have already announced plans to lend Pakistan $2 billion and $900 million respectively.

Iqbal expressed displeasure over the government's reluctance to form PML-N suggested independent commission of men of integrity and honesty despite an agreement on this which was reached between Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and PML-N top leader Nawaz Sharif.

Gilani on Thursday launched an oversight council, saying this body would be made up of people of impeccable character and that it would oversee utilisation of all aid for up to 20 million flood-affected people in a transparent manner without pilferage of even a single penny.

Later information minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said the provinces would name people for the watchdog body.
