Karachi: Police fatally shot a man, who was arrested on Thursday and confessed to killing 22 people, in a bid to foil his escape from custody on Friday.

The accused, Ubaidur Rehman, was killed in Altaf Nagar of Orangi Town in a shoot-out, in which a police official also sustained injuries.

The arrest was declared by Tahir Naveed, deputy inspector general (DIG) of western Karachi. Investigators told media that the accused had confessed to killing 22 men, including eight police officials and four doctors.

Police sources said that the investigators were taking Rehman to identify his other accomplices when he allegedly tried to snatch the gun from a police official and was shot.

The DIG had also accused the man of his involvement in sectarian killings in the city and the suspect had confessed to murdering a political activist.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement, meanwhile, condemned the killing of a trader by the police. He had been arrested by the police on January 15 and declared a robber, the MQM claimed. Four days after his arrest, he was killed. The party said that the trader’s death was ample proof of the extra judicial killings of the party’s 36 workers.
