Mumbai Medha Patkar, social activist and leader of the National Alliance of People's Movement (NAPM), has demanded construction activity on the luxurious hill project by Lavasa Corporation Ltd be stopped immediately as it has violated Bombay High Court (HC) orders and misinterpreted the environmental clearance of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).
She has also urged the Maharashtra government to initiate the process of contempt of court against the company and if it refused "it would amount to a mockery of the process of justice." Speaking at a press conference in Pune on Friday, she said Lavasa was violating the HC's stop work order issued two years ago.
'Baseless' allegation
Lavasa in a recent release stated "the Bombay High Court had not issued any restraining order on construction at Lavasa project site. The construction at site is resumed after the ministry granted clearance. The allegation is baseless and without an iota of proof."
The claim by Lavasa is "misleading," countered the NAPM leader who has pointed out initially the MoEF had issued a status quo over the project.
