I can't believe she is dead, says Bhutto's husband

"I can't believe she is dead. I will only believe it once I verify it myself," said a shocked Asif Ali Zardari, husband of assassinated Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto before leaving for airport from his house in Dubai.

Dubai: "I can't believe she is dead. I will only believe it once I verify it myself," said a shocked Asif Ali Zardari, husband of assassinated Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto before leaving for airport from his house in Dubai.

Zardari and Bhutto's children Asifa, Bukhtawar and Bilawal left for airport at around 6 pm. They took a special plane from Dubai to Islamabad. Bhutto's children were stunned and shocked and so do their close family friends.

A number of journalists and grief-stricken Bhutto's supporters gathered outside her residence in Emirates Hills in Dubai.

Supporters of Bhutto in the UAE, where she lived during eight-year of self-exile, expressed shock and grief over the assassination. Most of her supporter were crying when Gulf News contacted them.

Rashid Chugtai, President of Bhutto's Pakistan People Party in Dubai, blamed the government for not providing enough security cover to the slain leader.

Ashish Mehta, Bhutto's lawyer in Dubai said: "We have lost a wonderful person. She was full of life. What a wonderful friend she was to people and to India as well."

Salim Kashmiri, a resident and party supporter, said it is the darkest day in the history of Pakistan. "It may lead to further bloodshed."

Saleem Farooq said that it was a conspiracy against Pakistan and democracy.
