Islamabad: Pakistan’s former chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry has threatened to sue politician Imran Khan for libel seeking payment of Rs20 billion in damages, in a legal notice sent on Thursday.

His lawyers said the ex-chief justice has demanded a public apology from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief within 15 days for accusing him of involvement in alleged poll rigging in 2013 general election.

They said legal proceedings would be initiated against the PTI chief if he failed to tender the apology.

“I claim from you in damages a token sum of Rs15 billion and another Rs5 billion only as damages for mental agonies, torture, harassment, humiliation, etc, caused to me as well as my family,” said the former chief justice in the notice.

“Allegations about my conduct and that of some of the ROs [returning officers drawn from the judiciary] are clearly based on some ulterior motives and political gimmickry,” the notice stated.
