Karachi: A Pakistani charity on Thursday said they wanted to develop campaign against the infanticide by showing the adoption of the newly born babies in a famous television show in which two babies were given away to the childless couples.

Last week Aamir Liaqat Husain, a controversial but much sought after television host, offered a baby girl to a childless couple in an especial Ramadan show for the Geo TV, the largest private channel in Pakistan.

“This is our campaign to create awareness among the masses that they should discourage inhuman dumping of newly born babies on roadside trash heaps,” S.M. Naseem, the spokesman of Chippa Welfare Association told Gulf News.

Naseem said that there was a high rate of baby dumping and his charity found average 24 alive or dead babies every month.

“The bodies are badly bitten by the dogs, cats, crows and eagles giving a horrible look to the innocent babies. We want to tell the people that regardless to their legitimacy or illegitimacy it is a murder of a human and thus the whole humanity,” Naseem said.

Most of the bodies or alive babies found are girls.

“The baby girls are 98 percent of the total number we find,” he said.

Regarding giving away the babies through the television show Naseem said that couple was thoroughly vetted in advance.

“Generally we take over 10 days to vet the qualification of the childless couple before giving the babies to them. We ensure that whether the couple really has any medical reason, and that are they economically sound to nurture and raise the baby. Besides we also try to ascertain what kind of human beings they are.”

All the legal work is done before handing over a baby to the couple.

“We get the children registered with the NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority) and the babies have both the paternal and maternal identity of her adopted parents.”

Naseem called the people to curb the infanticide without indulging into the debate of illegitimacy.

“This is our call to the society to condemn the dumping of babies abandoned and instead they just leave them into our cradles so that humanity could be saved and honoured.”
