Islamabad: Former prime minister Benazir Bhutto dropped a broad hint she was willing to enter into a deal with President Pervez Musharraf when she spoke at the London School of Economics this week.
According to reports in local newspapers yesterday from their correspondents in London, the Pakistan People's Party leader was asked at the lecture meeting on Tuesday whether her credibility would not be severely damaged if she struck a deal with Musharraf.
More important
The reports quoted Benazir as saying that for her restoration of democracy in Pakistan and saving the country from falling into the hands of extremists was more important than her credibility.
Answering further questions, she spoke strongly against ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML) and the Mutahidda Majlis Amal (MMA) alliance of Islamic parties in the context of extremism in the country.
She said that without ousting the PML and its allies from power, the war against extremism and terrorism could not be won.
The PPP leader blamed the army and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for the problems the country was facing today but, reports said, she significantly avoided mentioning Musharraf by name even in passing.
