Islamabad: To combat rising crime, Islamabad police authorities are introducing a beat system for their constabulary to ensure effective policing, say media reports.

The beat system will see a special induction of inspector or sub-inspector level officials as a beat in-charge at every police station in the Pakistani capital, The Nation quoted Islamabad's senior superintendent of police Tahir Alam Khan as saying.

The rationale behind this move is to share the burden of the station house officer (SHO) and ensure effective policing. Crime rate in the federal capital has witnessed an upsurge in recent months, climbing by 18 per cent in the year 2010 compared to 2009, the daily quoted.

People living in other sectors of Islamabad have complained of an increase in street crimes.

The city's police stations have registered many cases of mobile and cash snatching at gun point.

Car and motorbike theft have also been reported, with many victims saying they are being forced to give their possessions to avoid being killed.

According to local officials, preventive measures have been taken to educate people in safety measures as well as self defence.
