Karachi: Large contingents of police on Wednesday raided slums in Karachi and rounded up at least 30 Afghan suspects who may have been involved in the kidnapping of a doctor, police officials said.

Sources said that police were informed that Dr Saif was kidnapped from the Ganna Mandi area of Sohrab Goth, a hotbed of militants and other criminals. The doctor was kidnapped and his car stolen while he was driving back home in the evening.

The police reached the spot and after an exchange of gunfire rescued the doctor. The four alleged kidnappers, who were Afghans, fled from the scene using the advantage of the darkness of night, police said.

However, on Wednesday, Rao Anwar, the senior superintendent of police formed several teams and raided the area in order to arrest the kidnappers. During the search operation, police recovered a large quantity of motorcycle spare parts, which were disassembled from stolen bikes, they said.

At least 30 suspects were also arrested from the area and their interrogation was ongoing.

Meanwhile, some days ago, the police encountered a gang of Taliban militants in the same vicinity and gunned down at least seven suspected militants during the hours’ long operation. However, seven of them including two injured suspects managed to escape.

Law enforcement agencies were also stepping up their efforts to round up the suspects around the city after a failed jailbreak attempt in the city.

A police spokesman said that at least 106 raids were conducted in the city in the last 24 hours in which at least 42 suspects were arrested.

At least five people were gunned down in the city whereas 10 others were injured in different incidents of violence, he said.
