Rome: Pope Benedict and US President George W. Bush met at the Vatican Gardens on Friday for private talks.
"Such an honour, such an honour," Bush said to the pope.
It was the first time a meeting at the Vatican with a head of the state was not held in the pope's private study.
After the meeting, Bush and Benedict exchanged gifts. Bush gave the pope a framed photograph of them walking along the White House colonnade.
Benedict also gave Bush a framed photograph and four volumes on St. Peter's Basilica.
