Colombo: The Tamil Tiger rebels say the government shelled a makeshift hospital treating the wounded inside Sri Lanka's war zone in an attack that killed 47 people.
Rebel spokesman Seevaratnam Puleedevan told The Associated Press that a shell hit the hospital Tuesday morning.
A health official reached by telephone confirmed the attack on the admissions ward of the hospital and said a further 56 people were wounded.
