'No further enlargement of EU without Lisbon Treaty'

Strasbourg: The European Parliament says any further enlargement of the European Union is "barely conceivable" without the Lisbon Treaty.
The charter, meant to replace the failed EU constitution, was rejected by Ireland in a referendum on Friday. The EU assembly says this brings one of the most difficult political challenges in EU history.
The Lisbon Treaty must be ratified by all 27 EU countries to take effect. The draft gives the European Parliament vast new powers.
Senior EU lawmakers on Monday urged the remaining eight countries to continue ratifying the treaty. They appealed to EU leaders, who are scheduled to meet at a summit in Brussels later this week, to "take all appropriate steps" to push the treaty through by June 2009 despite the Irish rejection.
