Manama: Nato would consider Iran a threat if it acquired nuclear capability, the organisation's Secretary-General said.

"While Nato as such is not involved in the Iran issue, we support international endeavours to find a political and diplomatic solution. But if Iran at a certain stage actually acquires nuclear capability, then we would consider it a threat against the alliance," Anders Fogh Rasmussen told Gulf News.

"This is also the reason we are considering the establishment of a missile defence system that we can start to deploy by 2011."

Missile defence system

The system will be set up in Europe, and will cover all allies of Nato, the world's largest military alliance.

"The Americans are of course in the lead, but according to their new approach and plans, the missile defence system will be developed within a Nato framework," he said.

Rasmussen who was elected to the top Nato post last year, said he blamed the Taliban in Afghanistan for causing the death of many innocent civilians.

"I have to say that a huge majority of the casualties are caused by the Taliban, and I base this on statistics from the United Nations. We know that the Taliban use innocent civilians, women and children, as human shields," he said.

The presence of Muslim and Arab troops in Afghanistan is crucial for the alliance. "They play a very important role militarily and on the humanitarian level, financially and also as far as cultural and religious aspects are concerned."

"I do believe that active participation of soldiers with a Muslim background makes it visible that what is going on in Afghanistan is not a fight against religion, but against extremism and terrorism," he said.

Rasmussen, who as prime minister of Denmark during the issue over the controversial cartoons waded into controversy with Muslim ambassadors, said that "religion and faith should not be divisive and, on the contrary, they should promote peace, forgiveness, mercy and tolerance."

No double standards Mr Rasmussen. yes! Iranians are no saints, same as any other world entities with Nuclear Arsenals. Why dont you think in the direction of Total ban on all mass distructive arsernals, wether it be Neuclear Chemical or Biological whether it be Iran Israel or any other formidable distructive or constructive regimes countries or forces on earth. Let us agree on one common ideology of universal ban of al l kind of mass killing mechanisem as an essential basic for world peace. Let us all work towards that universal goal realisation, Mr Rasmussen. Then and there only Peace will prevail on earth. Give palestine its due Land freedom and that is the only way forward for a lasting peaceful enviornment in this part of the world. There irans gameplan wont have fertile soil to grow and that will naturally contain within or realising the futility of their design and schemes and brake or get distroyed by the forces within, this century its the Era of brain not of Muscles, various contemporary examples can be spread in front of you including the present scenarieo in Afganistan where your forces are getting ample lessons to learn from.

I absolutely agree with Joe. Why is eveyone after Iran that doesn't even have the proven capacity yet to make nuclear weapons while the US and Israel have thousands of dangerous nuclear missles. Why is a country that hasn't attacked another country for the last 300 years more threatening than than countries that only 60 years ago bombed Hiroshima & Nagasaki, the after effects of which are still being felt today and the country that only a few years ago bombed over innocent Palestinan villages. Why should we trust Israel and the US with nuclear weapons after what they did in Afghanistan & Iraq??? Where are the weapons of mass destruction which was the very reason why they entered Iraq?

Israel is actually pointing its nuclear arsenal at Europe according to the report - Why not consider them as a threat? What about India, Pakistan, China, Russia - Do you consider these as threats or this is singled out towards Iran only?

The biggest terror today is Israel and we are being deviated from the main picture into believing this nonsense on Iran. Why persist on something that hasn't taken place? Why not concentrate on a more deadly issue of the adamant kid Israel? Only goes to show the lack of power US has over a decision on Israel. What a shame as they continue to kill our children and we do nothing but talk. Shameful!
