Dhaka: A massive manhunt is underway for a leading film actor, famous for the notorious characters he plays on screen, as he appeared as a "villain" in real life, severely assaulting a traffic policeman, police said on Wednesday.

"We are looking for [Monwar Hussain] Dipjol at all possible places where he could hide and keeping a track on people close to him," a police official told Gulf News as newspaper reports said activities of several film actresses who were known for their closeness with the "star villain" were kept under vigilance.

His comments came as the mass circulation Samokal newspaper yesterday reported that detectives tracked mobile phones of several film actresses to track down Dipjol who is on the run for the past one week.

Bangladesh Protidin newspaper on Tuesday reported that detectives also kept a vigil on the houses of a number of film actresses suspecting the controversial actor could take refuge at their residences.

Dipjol, also a councillor of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC), beat up traffic police constable Altaf Uddin as he stopped his car for traffic rules violation at Gabtali area of the city and also pointed his licensed gun to the head of the policeman in typical film style.
