Malaysia rejects women travel restrictions

Kuala Lumpur: A proposal to restrict women from travelling overseas on their own has been rejected by Malaysia's home ministry on Monday.
Following an outcry from women's groups, Interior Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said they could not impose conditions that required women to seek written consent before travelling abroad.
Speaking to reporters, Albar said: “There cannot be (such) a rule. When a person applied for a passport, we don't ask them where they are going. A person who wants to travel makes his or her own decision to travel and how they are going to do it is up to them."
