Lima: The US Geological Survey says a magnitude-6.4 earthquake has shaken southern Peru.
The USGS says the quake's epicenter was 25 kilometres (15 miles) west of Tacna, Peru, at a depth of 11 kilometres (6.8 miles). The quake struck at 9:43pm local time on Wednesday (6.45am Thursday UAE time) and was near the border with Chile, which on February 27 was hammered by a huge magnitude-8.8 quake and tsunami.
On August. 15, 2007, a magnitude-8 earthquake killed 596 people and reduced the Peruvian town of Pisco to rubble.
