Magistrates criticise Berlusconi's cancer remark
Premier Silvio Berlusconi came under fire on Thursday for his latest attack against the judiciary, in which he said that "politically driven" magistrates are the cancer of democracy.
Rome: Premier Silvio Berlusconi came under fire yesterday for his latest attack against the judiciary, in which he said that "politically driven" magistrates are the cancer of democracy.
The long-standing battle between Berlusconi and magistrates was rekindled when the premier's conservatives promoted a measure that would suspend Berlusconi's corruption trial in Milan for a year. The measure drew criticism from some magistrates as well as from the centre-left opposition.
The centre-left newspaper La Repubblica, commenting on Berlusconi's attack, yesterday said the premier is "obsessed" by the magistrates.
Antonio Di Pietro, a former anti-corruption magistrate and the current opposition leader, said he plans a demonstration next month against government policies. "We'll continue our opposition in this room and outside of it, and with referenda in order to abolish shameful laws and give Italy its dignity back," Di Pietro told parliament Wednesday night.
