Muscat: Captain of the South Korean chemical carrier Samho Jewelry, which was rescued from the Somalian pirates by a daring commando action by a Korean Navy unit last Friday, is out of danger but is in the ICU of Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah.

"He is out of danger but may have to undergo one more surgery," a spokesperson for the Korean embassy in Muscat told Gulf News yesterday.

Captain Seok Hae-kyun, 57, who was shot in the stomach during the daring rescue operation by South Korean Navy commandos, was the only one wounded among the 21-member crew of the 11,500-tonne chemical tanker that was heading to Sri Lanka from the UAE when captured by the pirates off Oman's coast.

During the raid, the South Korean commandos killed eight Somli pirates and rescued all 21 crew members. Five of the pirates were captured and Korea may take them to Seoul for trial.
