Body of St. Padre Pio goes on public display
Thousands of people flocked to see the exhumed body of popular Italian saint Padre Pio when it went on public display on Thursday.
Rome: Thousands of people flocked to see the exhumed body of popular Italian saint Padre Pio when it went on public display on Thursday.
Some 15,000 devotees attended Mass said by Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins before the body went on display at the Santa Maria delle Grazie church in San Giovanni Rotondo.
St. Padre Pio died in 1968 after living for decades with bleeding wounds on his hands and feet, like the wounds Jesus suffered at crucifixion.
Church officials have said there was no sign of the so-called stigmata on his limbs after an initial examination after the body was exhumed, but the body was in good condition.
It is not yet known when the body will be reburied.
