Bangladesh reinforces ban on street campaigns
Emergency-ruled Bangladesh has reinforced a ban on street campaigns by political parties, less then two weeks after the interim government relaxed the restrictions under the tough emergency rules in view of the upcoming December 18 general elections.

Dhaka: Emergency-ruled Bangladesh has reinforced a ban on street campaigns by political parties, less then two weeks after the interim government relaxed the restrictions under the tough emergency rules in view of the upcoming December 18 general elections.
After an advisory or cabinet committee meeting on law and order on Tuesday, the interim administration warned political parties not to hold rallies and processions till November 27 as such gatherings "will constitute a breach of the Emergency Powers Rules (EPR)", officials said here on Wednesday.
The meeting ordered law enforcers to take action against any such violations as some political parties continued to stage street marches and rallies "misunderstanding" or "misinterpreting" the November 3 government announcement relaxing the emergency rules.
"It will be tantamount to violation of rules if any party or candidate stages street campaigns or carries out electioneering before November 27," Home Secretary Abdul Karim said after the meeting, chaired by home adviser retired major general M.A. Matin.
"The EPR has been relaxed, not repealed," Karim said, warning of taking tough measures against violation of the tough law.
Immediately after the meeting, police headquarters came up with a statement accusing political parties of defying the EPR through "misinterpreting" the government order relaxing the tough law.
"All concerned are being requested to refrain from staging such programmes in the interest of upholding law and order," it said.
