London: Police believe they now have sufficient evidence to prosecute two men for the rape and murder of British schoolgirl Scarlett Keeling in Goa.

According to sources close to the investigation, detectives in India will recommend that prime suspects Samson D'Souza and Placido Carvalho face trial.

Officers are also seeking arrest warrants for others they believe were involved in an alleged cover-up of the 15-year-old's death.

Scarlett's body was found on a beach in the Goan resort of Anjuna in February 2008. After a hastily arranged post-mortem, police announced she had died from accidental drowning.

However, following pressure from Scarlett's mother, Fiona MacKeown, a second post-mortem was carried out a month later, which revealed that the teenager had been raped and killed after taking a cocktail of drugs.

Scarlett had remained in Anjuna in the care of her boyfriend, a 25-year-old tour guide, while the rest of her family, including her six siblings, went travelling around other parts of India.

Police report

Officers from India's Central Bureau of Investigation are due to deliver their report on the case to the Bombay High Court on Saturday, with the final decision on whether to charge the men resting with a magistrate. Sources said it would be "unusual" if the magistrate did not follow police advice.

At her home near Bideford, Devon, Mrs MacKeown, 44, said she had heard from her lawyer in India that detectives were poised to make a number of arrests.
