Mumbai: Outgoing Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan and his wife Radha were given an emotional farewell by the state cabinet led by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan at the Sahyadri State Guest House at Malabar Hill on Wednesday.

Appreciating the work done by the former governor in various fields, particularly welfare of the disadvantaged and higher education, Chavan said the state government benefited immensely from the counsel provided to him and his colleagues especially during difficult times. Chavan also added that in his personal capacity, too, he will miss the advice and guidance of Sankaranarayanan.

Several members of the state cabinet lined up to express their wishes and offer roses to Sankaranarayanan and his wife.

In his farewell speech, the emotionally-moved former governor thanked the state government for giving him “more than 100 per cent support” during his tenure of four and-a-half years. He also thanked the people of Maharashtra for the love and affection given to him during his tenure. Soon after the farewell, he left for their hometown in Palghat, Kerala.

Unceremoniously transferred

A couple of days back, he submitted his resignation to President Pranab Mukherjee after he was unceremoniously transferred to Mizoram. Most of the Congress-appointed governors across the country have been compelled to submit their resignation ever since the BJP came to power. Sankaranarayanan had stated soon after his resignation that he was a “free man” now and would start working for the Congress party. “In fact, after 24 hours, my tongue will be two inches longer, so that there will no restrictions for expressing views,” he was quoted by a newspaper here.

C Vidyasagar Rao from Andhra Pradesh, a trusted aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was named the Governor of Maharashtra on Tuesday.
