The sports star will be the face of Earth 2012 in the country and his name is already encouraging and inspiring citizens, especially the youth.
Supporting the Earth Hour-World Wildlife Fund's global campaign to create awareness, Tendulkar said: "It is heartening to see how a single action of switching off lights for Earth Hour can bring the world together to pledge action towards a better environment. I am happy to be a part of this movement and encourage others to participate as well."
Individuals, organisations, institutions and groups have been preparing to mobilise people to switch off lights on Saturday from 8.30pm. There will be several candle light gatherings at various location in Mumbai.
The Young Environmentalists and the founder of this organisation, Elsie Gabriel, will hold an Earth Hour vigil with candles lights and solar lanterns at the sprawling residential complex at Hiranandani Gardens in suburban Powai.
"In 2012, this complex saved 346,911 watts of electricity and in 2011 it jumped to 5.18 million watts," she said.
