Strange though it may seem, as psychologists talk only about parents and children, is it a fact that schools are equally responsible in inducing stress level of students before board exams?

Rajbir Singh, Principal, Government Boys Senior Secondary School No 3, Najafgarh admits results are a “prestige issue” for a school. “The results are of very much importance to us. That’s because, if the results are good, the school is perceived to be of high standard.”

“There could be other parameters involved, but marks certainly are of prime concern. A good percentage also helps students appearing for IIT or other competitive exams,” he adds.

Singh claims his school regularly monitors students appearing for the board exams. “All students are provided with telephone numbers of teachers and are advised to contact them 24X7 in case of any problem or if they are under any kind of stress or feel depressed. The teachers have to solve their issues at any cost.”

Principal of Karl Huber School, Noida, Ruchira Trivedi says, “Marks are certainly important to us as they are to any school. But it is not the ‘do all and be all’ of life in any way, as every student is different. While some may be good in studies, others can certainly excel in other fields. And not just India, the world-over there are numerous examples of people making a name for themselves in several fields other than academics.”

Trivedi, who believes in the cool quotient of life adds, “Unnecessary stress and expectations from a child can ruin their lives. Teachers at our school and I myself are always there to guide and help students at all times — whether they need psychological help or assistance in studies.”
