Mumbai: The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2013 which will now hold its 10th edition today has indeed set in motion a running movement not just across this city but the entire country.

It has changed the lives of thousands of people by introducing them to the benefits of running and at the same time touched the lives of countless individuals through its strong charity drive, that has helped raise an impressive Rs710 million towards charity through its nine editions.

Contemporary artist, Paresh Maity, who has designed this year’s trophy to the winners, says, “For the average Mumbaikar, there is great emotional connect with the marathon. The participants and the spectators see the marathon as their triumph over the hurdles of life, and not just living in Mumbai. The body language of the trophy is positive without any arrogance but with a hint of a smile of a winner. Of one who knows that he will eventually overcome.”

A total count of 38,427 participants will be out on the tracks on race day, with the full marathon receiving 4169 entries, up from last year’s figure of 2775, to train hard and attempt the distance of 42.197kms.

Haile Gebreselassie, Ethiopian long distance runner and sporting icon who has 27 world records including two Olympic Gold Medals, is the event ambassador of the marathon and told the media, “For me, a day without running is like a day without eating. I run to improve myself with every run. Even though a competition is just a part of the race, these championships and world records are very motivating. If you need to cleanse your brain, you need to run and sweat, get in the morning and get going.”

For many, the marathon is more than just a race since it becomes a perfect opportunity to do one’s bit for charity, especially those who feel passionately about a cause and want to raise substantial sum of funds. Shaan, well-known Indian playback singer, says, “I, along with Salaam Bombay Foundation, am raising funds to fulfil 1000 dreams of students who are pursuing their academics. We are raising funds to empower young minds and also give them enough strength to stay away from tobacco and other forms of substance abuse. I am running to create a stronger and healthier future for the next generation.”

Meanwhile, in order to ensure a smooth race, safety and security of participants and spectators along the route of the marathon and to maintain smooth flow of traffic, the Mumbai Traffic Police has imposed traffic restrictions and closure of certain roads. Alternate routes have been advised for those travelling to and from the airport and from the suburbs to south Mumbai.
