Mumbai: A man has been killed after getting into a fight over taking too long to use a public toilet.

Simon Lingeree, 26, was using shared facilities in his Mumbai apartment building - or chawl - on Saturday evening while another resident impatiently waited outside.

When he emerged from the toilet, he got into a heated argument with Santosh Kargutkar, 40, over the amount of time he had taken.

Kargutkar hit Lingeree in the head and fled the scene when he lost consciousness, police said.

The victim was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Senior police inspector Rarao Desai said: 'It first started off as a war of words but Kargutkar soon assaulted Lingeree. The two of them got involved in a physical fight but there were no weapons involved.'

Police are waiting for the results of a post-mortem but believe Mr Lingeree died as a result of an internal injury.

Inspector Desai told the Times Of India: 'It seems that the man died because of some internal injury he got during the fight.

'Based on eyewitness accounts we were able to identify the accused and track Kargutkar down in a few hours.'

Kargutkar has been charged with murder and remains in police custody.

Residents of chawls in India frequently have to share toilets and other amenities.

Rajesh Paswan, a resident in the chawl where both Lingeree and Kargutkar lived, said: 'We have absolutely no public sanitation facilities. Sometimes basic human needs take over all rationale, and this is what happened. It is tragic that two lives have been destroyed over such a petty issue.'

I really cant understand why people are writing against not publishing this news by GN? isn't that suppose to be free journalism that we keep on supporting and then also oppose it. I don't think by publishing the news they have tried to deteriorate India's image but highlighting the social issues our countries have. We are educated people and we know what is right or wrong & accordingly make our decision. I would like to comment on one of the comments that why GN is highlighting about the crimes happening in UAE? Why not? i being resident of UAE have the right to know about whats happening in society and together make it a Good Place to LIVE. I would urge people take it lightly and take it as a source of Information. Regards,

We cannot ignore the happenings in India, by putting a blind eye. Why do people want to highlight only the good things happening. I am a regular reader of Gulf News and witnessed GN publishing even good news of India and not only bad. Why is it that when such petty things happen, we ignore to even know about it? It's good that through media, news we can find out about even for such petty issues, murders are committed and also recently I read news of a 7 yr old girl being sacrificed in India as they believed that it will bring them wealth. Thanks to Gulf news and being an Indian, I also want to know the good as well as bad happening in Idia, even if it is as small as a needle. How can we make our country a better place to live then?

There may be 100 events worst than this....but of course 1000 things better than this in INDIA. By highlighting this news could you please imagine what people will think those who have never visited INDIA? Please be more cognizant before publishing this since you are having millions of regular readers both residents and non-residents.

What is wrong in Gulf news publishing this news which was true. It seems "Truth will always be bitter". Because this news is published, people can be cautious next time in order to avoid these kind of bitter incidents which could have been avoided if there was patience. Moreover this news will give the opportunity for the readers to avoid this kind of incident in our life not only in toilets but in many occasions in public life.

100% agree with Mr Sajeev. Lot of good things happening in India and the world. Similarly lots of other issues, different scams affecting the public. Why Gulf News/ other Medias are only interested in these types of assignments/ petty case and mainly targeting India?

I strongly agree both comments. It is absolutely right. Nowadays the news are very cheap and spoiling the image of the Newspaper. Writing like sex crimes, common news, etc instead of something where students also can read and gain knowledge. Pls publish some educational instead of crime news.

This is not at all good. Are u only meant for finding bad things happening in India? Please write something good too in fact many good things happen in India. It might be true that people are fighting for toilets or other such news but its not such a bad country where only these kind of things happen. Open your eyes wide and bring the reports...

There is a lot of good things happening in India other than a fight happend in Slum for toilet.....even Indian Media is interested in bad news only.... in UAE you can see people from all over the world, by reading this you can imagine what will be going on their mind about India.
