Kolkata: Even after being sacked as the general secretary of West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday, the deafening silence from Mukul Roy’s camp has rattled the upper echelons of the party.

Many within the TMC had expected Roy to give fiery statements against chief minister and party chairperson Mamata Banerjee after the fallout between the two has been surprised by his reaction.

“I am enjoying it. I am enjoying everything. Every man has a different style of taking things,” a smiling Roy told reporters here reacting to his sacking.

“It took us 34 years to remove the CPI (M) government. Whether the next government will last 68 years or 68 months, only time will tell,” said Roy, adding further fuel to the speculation of him joining the BJP.

“Roy has always been a cool customer. Unlike Didi (Banerjee) who is known to be temperamental he can keep his calm even at the worst of situations. However, this has become more difficult for us as none of us is sure what his next course of action will be,” said a TMC core committee member.

However, Roy’s son Subhrangshu, who is a TMC legislator, has been keeping good terms with other party leaders.

“We thought he would take a different stance considering that his father has been sidelined. But till now he has not said a word, which has confused many of us further,” the TMC member added.

There was speculation that Roy may leave the party post the municipal elections and join BJP, though no one from the saffron outfit has confirmed it, amid talk that Roy had meet party president Amit Shah in Delhi last week.

“It is an utter lie. There was no meeting between Amit Shah and Mukul Roy. There is no truth in speculative stories,” BJP national secretary Siddharth Nath Singh told reporters in Kolkata.

Sources however say that BJP has asked Roy to stay put until October for his name to be cleared by the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) probing the multimillion rupees Saradha scam.

“We are waiting for the right time. Joining or leaving any party is a major decision that no one can take in a hurry. Also it is not about him only joining. For a leader like Roy, who is known for his organisations skills it is about who else and how many join along with him,” said a close confidant of Roy.

Speculation is rife within political circles, that as many as 32 state legislators along with five Member of Parliament may switch side along with Roy.

“Everyone will know everything when if it happens. Media may be interested in the details but it is too early to take a call,” the insider added.
