Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered a detailed probe on Thursday’s bomb blast in the town of Japaiguri in North Bengal that killed five persons and injuring nine others.

Forensic teams also reached Jalpaiguri town on Friday to examine the kind of explosives used to carry out the blast, the police said. “On Friday forensic teams have examined the blast site to find out the type of explosives used to carry out the blast. A high alert has been issued all over the state,” said Director General of Police G.M.P. Reddy.

The injured were admitted to the Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital from where two persons were referred to the North Bengal Medical College Hospital. The condition of some of the injured was critical, hospital sources said.

“The condition of those injured in Thursday’s blast in extremely critical. Most of them have severe injuries from shrapnel and serious skin burns. Of the nine patients, five have undergone surgery and the remaining are being constantly monitored,” said a doctor of the hospital.

Though Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) is considered to be the prime suspect, police are yet to confirm the same. “We are investigating all possible angles and will conclude the probe soon. Before that nothing can be confirmed,” said IG (law and order) Anuj Sharma.

Police sources believe that it could also be handiwork of the Maoists who could easily use the international border adjoining the town to escape to Nepal. “We are yet to ascertain whether it is a terrorist attack or a carrier was carrying explosives and it went off accidentally,” Shashikant Pujari, Inspector General North Bengal, said.

“The new found political peace in North Bengal is not to the liking of many who want to see political and social disturbance. Police is investigating, but we should have been more alert,” said development minister Gautam Deb.
