Thiruvananthapuram: A day after Kerala Congress leader and government chief whip, PC George, alleged that top police officers in the state were operating behind the scenes to help a businessman accused of murdering a security guard, the state police chief, KS Balasubramaniam has denied the allegation.

On Thursday, George had alleged that the director-general of police (DGP) was involved in diluting the case against Mohammad Nisham, a Thrissur-based businessman accused of fatally assaulting a security guard, Chandrabose, apparently because the latter was slow to open the gate.

On Friday, it emerged that George was also targeting a former DGP, MN Krishnamurthy. A local television channel revealed a copy of the letter that George gave to the chief minister, Oommen Chandy. The letter points to a conversation that the former DGP allegedly had with the former Thrissur police commissioner, Jacob Job, asking for favourable treatment for the businessman. George alleges that the conversation was at the behest of the incumbent DGP.

Both Balasubramaniam and Krishnamurthy have denied George’s allegations. Krishnamurthy said a recorded telephonic conversation produced by George claiming to be a talk between him and the Thrissur police commissioner was fraudulent, and that he had never been involved in anything corrupt in his life.

Balasubramaniam said he had no links to the businessman and he had not entrusted anyone to speak to the former Thrissur police commissioner.

After meeting the chief minister late on Thursday night, George met home minister Ramesh Chennithala on Friday. Chennithala had commented that the government had “full faith in the DGP” after George alleged on Thursday that he had evidence that the DGP had intervened to help dilute the case against Nisham.

Opposition leaders have also accused the police of taking a soft approach with the businessman and questions have been raised about taking Nisham to Bengaluru for another case registered against him there. Opposition members have alleged that it was a pleasure trip for policemen in the company of the wealthy businessman.
