Thiruvananthapuram: The former chief justice of India's apex court, K.G. Balakrishnan, has come under fresh fire, this time from the Kerala High Court Advocates Association.
The association has carried a motion against the former Supreme Court chief justice, and demanded that he step down from his current position as the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission.
The advocates want him to stay out of office until an investigation is completed on allegations levelled against him and his family members.
The advocates' association has demanded the federal government to order a detailed inquiry into the allegations against Balakrishnan and his kith and kin.
Battling allegations
One of Balakrishnan's sons-in-law, P.V. Sreenijan, is battling allegations of amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income, and the state government has ordered a vigilance investigation into the matter. Sreenijan has, meanwhile, quit from his official post in the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.
Another son-in-law of Balakrishnan, M.J. Benny, also has allegations against him pertaining to disproportionate assets. Balakrishnan's brother K.G. Bhaskaran who was alleged to have bought up land in neighbouring Tamil Nadu state, had recently resigned from his post as special government pleader for the state government.
Earlier this month, the Bar Council of Kerala had resolved to petition the president for an investigation into the allegations against the Balakrishnan family.
