New Delhi: Taking note of the surcharged atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir over a high-profile sex scandal, the Supreme Court yesterday transferred the trial in the case from Srinagar to Chandigarh.
A bench of Chief Justice Y.K. Sabharwal and Justice C.K. Thakker passed this order on transfer petitions filed by 14 accused in the case.
Threat and intimidation
It held that it would be in the interest of justice to transfer these cases for trial and other proceedings from the Principal Sessions Court of Srinagar to the District and Sessions Judge of Chandigarh, as the accused had alleged threat and intimidation when they were taken to the court.
The bench also took note that no lawyer in Srinagar was willing to appear for the accused following a resolution passed by the Jammu and Kashmir Bar Association that no one should defend the accused.
In this case the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested 18 people and charge sheets had been filed in respect of the 14 of them.
