Mumbai: Russy K. Karanjia, a well-known Indian journalist, died of old age at his home, his daughter said on Saturday. He was 95.
Karanjia passed away on Friday night, said daughter Rita Mehta.
He was cremated in Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment capital, where he spent most of his life. His cremation at the Chandanwadi electric crematorium was a deviation from the normal way his Paris community disposes of their dead. He began his career with The Times of India newspaper and left it in 1940s to start Blitz, a tabloid devoted to investigative journalism. He was widely believed to be be the father of investigative journalism in India. Karanjia used to speak proudly of his stint as a correspondent during World War II.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condoled Karanjia's death. "Karanjia was a respected and veteran journalist who received acclaim and recognition within and outside India for his rich contribution to the world of journalism," Singh said in a message to the bereaved family.
