Indian business leaders in UAE hail nuclear waiver deal
Top Indian businessmen in UAE spoke to Gulf News hailing the nuclear waiver deal signed on Saturday in Vienna.
The Nuclear Supplier Group comprising 45 nations approved a US proposal on Saturday to lift a global ban on nuclear trade with India in a breakthrough towards sealing a US-Indian atomic energy deal.
One hurdle remained before the US-India deal can take force - ratification by the U.S. Congress. It must act before adjourning in late September for elections or the deal could be left to an uncertain fate under a new US administration.
Top Indian businessmen in UAE spoke to Gulf News hailing the nuclear waiver deal:
Ram Buxani, Executive Vice Chairman, ITL Group: The decision is an acceptance of the sovereignty of the country. We have been able to pass the right message on to those who were monopolising nuclear power and we are on the right track.
Abbas Ali Mirza, President of Indian Business and Professional Council (IBPC: While there are different views being aired on this achievement, in my view, it could well be a defining moment in Indian history. Today will end India's 34- year-old nuclear isolation. The mere fact that without signing on the non-proliferation treaty India is now able to enter the nuclear club makes it an achievement in itself...that too amidst opposition by some of the member-nations of the nuclear supplier group.
Dr B R Shetty, Chairman of NMC group: This is a very positive development. It is a step forward for India to achieve great progress in energy sector. It is also a victorious moment for the Prime minister who stood up for the deal and settled international as well as internal issues with ease.
Joy Alukkas, Managing Director of Joy Alukkas Jewellery: Energy is a matter of grave concern as far as the development of a nation is concerned. So today's decision will play a key role in shaping the future. Whenever change is proposed, people disagree and create havoc.this is common…the real challenge is to turn around the tables by convincing people. I think we were successful in it.
Mohan Jashanmal, CEO of Jashanmal and chairman of the Indian Business Council: Nuclear power in the hands of a stable country like India is safe and is for the betterment of the world in terms of being environmentally friendly. Time and again India has proved itself to be a tolerant country where diverse communities live together. Today ,we are one step closer to finding a good solution to its huge energy demands.
