Patna: Bihar was outraged on Sunday after a 30-year-old woman was gang-raped by two dreaded gangsters in a private nursing home as the harried patients, their attendants and hospital staff looked on with terror. In a quick action, however, the police have arrested both the culprits.

The incident which took place in the City Hospital located in the heart of the state capital has shocked the residents who normally rush to the private hospitals hoping for better care and security.

Police said the victim employed as a maid in the hospital was busy attending patients on Friday night when two criminals dragged her to the operation theatre (OT) at gun point in a bid to rape her. Reports added soon after noticing the CCTV cameras installed in the OT, the gangsters took her to other room of the hospital and raped her.

Witnesses said after committing the crime, the gangsters kidnapped the victim and carried her away in their car. Police rescued her later. Based on the victim’s information, the police later conducted raids in the areas and nabbed both the accused on Saturday. Police said the main arrested accused Dharmendra Yadav faces more than 12 criminal cases, such as murder, robbery and extortion, lodged with various police stations in the state capital.

“The accused have been arrested within six hours of committing the crime and both of them have confessed their guilt,” Patna’s senior superintendent of police Jitendra Rana told the media yesterday adding the case would be speedily tried.

The incident comes barely a fortnight after five Dalit women had been gang-raped at Kurmuri village in central Bihar’s Bhojpur district, barely a few kilometres from Patna. This case also is being speedily tried.

This is the second incident of rape in hospital in the past three months. Earlier in July, a teenage girl had been gang-raped in another private nursing home located in Saran district in Bihar. The victim along with her elder sister had gone to meet their mother employed as nurse in the hospital when she was kidnapped and then allegedly gang-raped at gun-point by some four youths in one of the hospital rooms.

The incidents of rape have registered an alarming rise in Bihar in the past few years, much to everyone’s surprise. According to an official report, a total of 708 cases of rape were reported in the first seven months of Bihar which means an average 100 cases of rape were taking place every month in the state.

Last year, a total of 1,128 incidents of rape had been reported, followed by 927 cases reported in 2012, 934 in 2011, 795 in 2010, 929 in 2009, 1,041 in 2008, 1,122 in 2007, 1,083 in 2006 and 973 in 2005 — the year the Janata Dal (United) government came to power in Bihar after dethroning 15 years of Rashtriya Janata Dal government headed by Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi.
