Patna: Magnanimous thieves liberally spent money on the city’s poor in typical Robinhood style shortly after stealing Rs30 million from the house of an Indian politician in Bihar.

The money, which included Rs8 million in cash and gold jewellery worth around Rs22 million, had been stolen from the Patna residence of mighty politician Sadhu Yadav, brother-in-law of Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad, last month.

During police interrogation, the three thieves said they had donated all the money.

Soon after committing the theft they hired a rickshaw to flee with the cash. When they reached their destination, the rickshaw driver sought Rs30 as the wage but the thieves handed him Rs2,000 and asked him to enjoy.

The next day, two of the thieves riding on a bike reached a roadside juice seller near Gandhi Maidan in Patna and ordered two glasses of orange juice. The juice seller sought Rs50 but the thieves asked him to demand more.

“Only Rs50? Ask for more money,” asked the thieves. Before he could say anything, the thieves took out a bundle of Rs500 notes totalling about Rs35,000 from their pocket and gave it the fruit seller. Amazed, the fruit seller kept inquiring about them but the thieves sped away on their bike, very soon melting in the crowd. On Wednesday, the fruit seller returned the money to the local police after coming to know that the aforesaid money was a stolen amount.

In the evening the same day, the thieves went to a roadside tea stall and gave the seller a gold chain once they had been served tea.

The large-hearted thieves further gifted paddle rickshaws to poor rickshaw pullers.

According to the police, the thieves looted 3kg of gold from Yadav’s house, apart from Rs8 million in cash, half of which they later spent on purchasing land. The looted jewellery included 16 gold chains, 48 bangles, three bracelets, 107 earrings, 24 rings, 14 lockets, and diamond-studded lockets, 13 tops and many more. The matter is now being probed by the Income Tax department.
