Hyderabad: Freak weather continued to grip Andhra Pradesh as heavy unseasonal rains lashed many parts of the state on Tuesday. The rain and thunderstorms, under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation stretching from Rajasthan to Andhra Pradesh, as well as an atmospheric low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, have brought down the temperature significantly in all parts of the state except Rayalaseema.

In Hyderabad, where thundershowers affected normal life for the second consecutive day, the temperature fell to around 35 degrees Celsius, far below the normal temperature for this season.

Earlier, Hyderabad had been reeling under the summer heat with temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius.

Powerful gale-force winds uprooted trees on the busy Uppal Road, creating jams and forcing the authorities to divert the traffic. Power supply was also disrupted in several parts of the city. Heavy rains affected the normal life in the city outskirts of LB Nagar, Keesara, Hayatnagar and Kapra.

Heavy rains lashed districts of Warangal, Nalgonda, Guntur, Krishna, East Godavari, and Chittoor districts. The heaviest rainfall — of 8 cm — over a 24-hour period was recorded at Pakal in Warangal district, followed by 6 cm in Devarkonda in Nalgonda district.

According to the weather office, temperatures in coastal regions ranged from 4 to 7 degrees below normal for this time of the year.

The rain and hailstorm experienced on Tuesday was so severe that, according to the revenue minister N. Raghuveera Reddy, 13 people were killed in lightning strikes. Guntur reported the maximum number of casualties, with five people killed. “Crops in 56,000 hectares have been affected,” he said.

Rain in Bengaluru disrupted the Indian Premier League match between the Pune Warriors and local team Royal Challengers.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department has warned of more isolated rainfall in coastal regions under the influence of a low-pressure area stretching from Orissa to Tamil Nadu. Weather officials said that parts of Telangana and Rayalaseema will receive more rain under the influence of the weather disturbance.

The temperature in Rayalaseema region was still hovering above 40 degrees Celcius with Nandual in Kurnool recording 41 degrees.
