New Delhi: A man has been arrested after a four-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by her neighbour in Delhi, police said Friday.

The incident was reported from the Punjabi Bagh area in west Delhi and the accused Naresh, 21, was arrested Thursday.

“The medical examination of the girl confirmed sexual assault and, based on that, Naresh was arrested. He has been sent to judicial custody,” a police officer said.

The accused has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Posco) Act, 2012.

The act provides protection to all children under 18 from offences of sexual assault, sexual harassment and pornography. It explains the stringent punishments, which have been graded as per the gravity of the offence.

Former chief of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) Shanta Sinha said the incident was “shameful”.

“It is really sad and shameful that sexual abuse and assault continue to be perpetrated on children in the country, specially in the national capital Delhi,” Sinha said.

“I wish the authorities ensure that all procedures are followed under Posco, the identity of the child is kept confidential. The culprit should be brought to justice,” she said.

Meanwhile, three senior doctors attached to Goa’s only state-run medical college have been booked for sexual harassment following a complaint by a medical student, police said Friday.

The student at the Goa Medical College and Hospital said in her complaint that the three doctors sent her sexually explicit messages, passed vulgar remarks and have been intimidating her since February 2013, a police spokesperson said.

“We registered an FIR [first information report] last night [Thursday] at the women’s police station which deals with such cases. The complainant came to us some days ago. We were in the process of verifying the complaint,” the spokesperson said.

The authorities at the Goa Medical College and Hospital have also set up a committee to probe the accusations made by the student.

Anyone who rapes a child intentionally, should have a public death sentence without mercy to teach others, especially in India, where rape crimes are not punished severely and causing it to happen regularly, unfortunately.
