New Delhi: Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday stepped up pressure on the Delhi Police by highlighting a YouTube video in which three policemen are shown beating up a man and emptying his wallet.

“Not only does the video clearly show Delhi Police’s inhuman behaviour but also the urban legend of police extorting money,” said the AAP. “This video was shot by a vigilante near Lal Quila (Red Fort) and will the home minister (Sushil Kumar Shinde), under whom Delhi Police comes, make sure that action is taken against these policemen?”

Delhi police commissioner B.S. Bassi said the officers had been suspended and that the case will be investigated.

Ever since coming to power late last month, the AAP has been demanding transfer of Delhi police to the Delhi government, accusing them of being corrupt and providing shelter to those involved in drug and sex rackets.

A two-day sit-in protest took place early this week over the failure of the home ministry to take action against officers who defied the orders of a minister to search African women, the gang rape of a Danish tourist near New Delhi railway station and the failure to take action in a dowry harassment case. AAP says the rising crime in the capital is due to deep-rooted corruption in Delhi police.
