New Delhi: The Delhi High Court Monday directed veteran Congress party leader Narayan Dutt Tiwari to give his blood sample Saturday in a paternity suit filed by a man claiming to be his biological son.

Joint Registrar Deepak Garg Monday asked the court dispensary chief to appoint a doctor to take Tiwari's blood sample.

"Let an option be given to him (Tiwari) to appear voluntarily. Notice be issued to chief of dispensary...who will appoint a suitable doctor for blood sample," Garg said.

Extra-marital affair

Tiwari, 86, is embroiled in the paternity suit as Rohit Shekhar, 32, claims he was born out of an extra-marital affair Tiwari had with his mother. Tiwari, who served as foreign minister, chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand and as governor of Andhra Pradesh has been trying to avoid appearing before the court or give his blood sample.

In case of Tiwari, who is now living a retired life at Uttarakhand capital Dehradun, fails to turn up at the court dispensary and give his blood sample, the court may take police help to do so since Justice Reva Khetrapal had on May 16 directed the joint registrar to take police assistance, if needed, to bring Tiwari to the court premises for collecting his blood sample for a DNA test.

The High Court had also directed Tiwari not to leave the country under any circumstances without giving his blood sample for the DNA test.
