Thiruvananthapuram: The headmistress of a school in the Kerala capital, identified as Sasikala, where a student was allegedly put in a kennel, was granted bail by a local court. It was the student’s class teacher who allegedly put the boy in the kennel in the school compound.

On Tuesday, the state government took a serious view of the incident of an upper kindergarten student being locked up in a kennel as punishment for talking in the class, and had ordered closure of the school. The decision followed a report by the deputy director of education who found that the school had committed serious violations in its functioning.

The school, located at Kudappanakunnu on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, runs classes from LKG to class VII. Reports indicate that the school had often resorted to severe punishment methods.

Earlier reports said the matter came to light when the student’s sister who studies in the same school, found her brother in the kennel. The school authorities had apparently removed the dog to accommodate the student.

The incident took place on September 25, but came to light much later and the news triggered shock and outrage with several parents and others staging a public protest in front of the school. When the matter was reported to police, the school principal was booked, while the class teacher of the student went absconding. An official of the school reportedly said the incident was fabricated.
