Jodhpur: Hospital authorities here have provided security for a three-year-old boy who is battling for life after his alcoholic stepfather beat him up, hospital sources said on Sunday.

The security was provided after a group of men, believed to be relatives and friends of the boy's stepfather, tried to forcefully get the boy discharged from the hospital Saturday evening, the sources added.

Sanyam Jain, of Vishala village near Sanchor in Jalore district, was admitted to the intensive care unit of Ummed Hospital in Jodhpur on Thursday with fractured limbs and burn and scratch marks on his face and private parts.

Doctors said Sanyam has also developed ‘battered baby syndrome', like two-year-old Falak who is in a Delhi hospital.

Illegal clinic

His stepfather, Kailash Jain, runs an illegal clinic in Sanchor.

"A group of men came to the hospital and misbehaved with the attendants of the boy, including his mother Nidhi Jain, Saturday evening," a doctor at the hospital said.

He added that the people wanted to take the boy away and when his family members protested, they started manhandling them. "The police were informed but these people escaped," said the doctor.

Since Saturday evening a security guard has been posted in front of the intensive care unit ward where Sanyam is undergoing treatment. The police arrested Sanyam's stepfather, Kailash, on Friday and charged him with attempting to murder the boy.

"He tried to flee when he came to know that a police case has been registered against him. But he was traced in Sanchor and arrested Friday evening," a police officer said. The police registered the cases against Kailash following a complaint by his wife Nidhi Jain.

"As per the statements of Nidhi, she married Kailash in 2001, but the couple got separated after a few years due to frequent family feuds," the officer said.

"Nidhi then married Padamchand in 2007. Sanyam was born in 2010. But as Padamchand was unemployed, she left him as well after the birth of the child," the officer added.

About three months ago, Kailash lured Nidhi into returning to him.

"He promised if she would live with him, he would give up alcohol.

Tortured

"But after Nidhi moved into his house, he started consuming alcohol again. He hated the boy particularly," said the officer.

According to the woman's statement to the police, Kailash would not give the child food and tortured him.

"Kailash confined the boy in a room at his house Tuesday night and started torturing him in inhuman ways. He put burning cigarettes on his face and threw him on the ground, resulting in fractures to his legs and hands. The boy fell unconscious," said the officer.
